Family Scouting News Release

The BSA Expands Programs to Welcome Girls from Cub Scouts to Highest Rank of Eagle Scout

Research reinforces interest expressed by families and girls nationwide as organization looks to offer programs that meet the needs of today’s families

Irving, Texas – October 11, 2017 – Today, the Boy Scouts of America Board of Directors unanimously approved to welcome girls into its iconic Cub Scout program and to deliver a Scouting program for older girls that will enable them to advance and earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. The historic decision comes after years of receiving requests from families and girls, the organization evaluated the results of numerous research efforts, gaining input from current members and leaders, as well as parents and girls who’ve never been involved in Scouting – to understand how to offer families an important additional choice in meeting the character development needs of all their children.

Fall enrollment is now open for new Scouts!

Why Join Scouting?

An independent research study conducted by Tufts University reported boys involved in Scouting had a four-fold increase in character attributes like cheerfulness, helpfulness, kindness, obedience, trustworthiness and hopeful future expectations. Positive character translates into doing better in school, having higher career goals and making better life choices. In short, the Tufts Study shows that Scouting Builds Character!

Did you know many companies offer a matching gifts program to encourage charitable giving and
volunteering by their employees?

A matching gift program is a corporate philanthropy program designed to support the nonprofits which
a company’s employees are passionate about by matching donations made by employees. Many
companies even match the entire donation, which DOUBLES the donation for Scouting!

These are not basic skills but are innovative and effective techniques used by many of the forward-thinking businesses in the world. This experience not only provides the highest level of training offered at a Council level to serve the leaders of a Scouting unit, but actually transcends this aim to provide tools that can be used within your family, your work life and your relationships with other people. In fact, it is so powerful, that many attendees have said that the relationships they form during the course are some of the longest lasting friendships in their Scouting career. It is often said that their Wood Badge experience is “a mountaintop event” in their lives!
